Abrasion resistant steels HARDSTAL

HARDSTAL plates are plates of high and very high abrasion resistance that are mainly used in mining industry elements for equipment subject to heavy loads, conveyors, parts of excavators, road construction machinery, crushers, agricultural equipment, cutting edges, etc.

Characteristic

HARDSTAL is killed, grain-refined and water quenched steel. High level of hardness, toughness and high level of yield strength is obtained in quenched and tempered conditions. Heat treatment is carried out in special types of equipment. Thanks to high level of ductility and steel purity, the plates made from HARDSTAL can be formed in cold condition (bending operation).

Surface condition

Surface quality of HARDSAL is accordance with EN 10163-2 class A subclass 1, after rolling. Another surface quality to be agreed.

Internal quality

Internal quality of plates in accordance with EN 10160 class S1: plates of 6mm and bigger in thickness only.

Thermal cutting

All thermal cutting methods can be used for HARDSTAL cutting (gas, plasma, and laser). Plates of 6 – 30mm in thickness do not require preheating before cutting providing that the cutting process is performed at temperature higher than 5°C the preheating to temperature 50 – 100°C is recommended. The preheating is recommended in order avoid the edge cracks of plates. Temperature range depends on plates thickness. Water jet cutting can also be used.

Welding process

HARDSTAL is suitable for welding. All available welding methods can be used taking carbon equivalent values [Ce] into consideration (Ce values are given in table above). Welding at temperatures below 5°C is not recommended for reasons of cracks risk. In that case plates should be reheated to temperature 18 - 25°C before welding operation.

The plate’s surface to be welded should be dry without any oil and grease dirties. Heating before welding operation for plates up to 25mm in thickness is not necessary. For plates of thickness exceeding 25mm the reheating is recommend to temperature 150 - 200°C, if necessary only. The especially precaution should be taken during the welding (for long products especially) because the excessive stresses can be initiated.

Cold bending properties

Standard equipment and standard bending parameters (bending force) can be applied to the cold bending operation. Cold operation of grade HARDSTAL should be carried out at room temperature. Bending operation should be performed slowly and at a uniform rate. For plates of 6 – 30 mm in thickness the bending radii recommended are presented in table below:
